The pink beaches of Komodo are not a filter. Tiny fragments of red organ-pipe coral and the shells of microscopic red foraminifera mix with white sand to give the shoreline a soft rosy blush that glows strongest where the waves wash over it. There are several pink beaches in the park — the best known is Long Pink Beach (Pantai Merah) on Komodo Island, with another popular one on Padar.
Beyond the colour, the real treat is under water: the reef starts right off the beach, with table corals, clownfish, parrotfish and the occasional turtle. Most boat trips stop for an hour or so of swimming and snorkeling here.
