Hidden in a mountain valley in the Manggarai highlands of Flores, Wae Rebo is one of the most remarkable villages in Indonesia. Seven tall, cone-shaped Mbaru Niang houses stand in a circle on a green meadow, each home to several families, and the traditions of the Manggarai people are still very much alive.
After the houses were rebuilt with community support, the village received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2012. Visitors hike up from the village of Denge, are welcomed in a short ceremony and spend the night on mats in a communal house — an experience that contrasts beautifully with Komodo’s islands.
